Run Run Run

You know how I’ve been talking for like, years, about how I’m going to run a 5K race?

I’m finally going to do it, thanks to the support and encouragement of my friends. And the inferiority complex that I’ve developed since I discovered that I know two of the people who ran the Ironman Wisconsin in September.

The race I’m running is the 13th annual Run Like Hell to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. I even get my own “Hot as Hell” T-shirt, which I will wear proudly, assuming I don’t collapse midway and wind up crawling to the finish line.

I ran my 5K distance trial this morning, finishing in a slow but not wholly embarrassing 36-ish minutes (no stopwatch). Which isn’t too bad considering that a) I was already sore from getting my ass handed to me by the power yoga lady the day before – the “All Levels” label on the cover is a dirty lie – and b) Pittsburgh is well, hilly as hell, if hell is hilly. I assure you, my personal hell is hilly. I like flat. Flat is good.

Anyways, that marks the first time EVER IN MY LIFE that I have run three miles without stopping. Yay! I’ll be doing some lighter training this week, including the mile trial that I am long overdue to do, and then running like hell on Saturday evening.

Wish me luck! I’ll post my time here when I’m done. Assuming I don’t collapse midway and wind up crawling to the finish line.

10/19 Mile Trial Update: 8:58 mile

Not too bad, not too bad. I think that under better conditions, i.e. when I’m not dodging football players on the track and when I haven’t eaten a big lunch only a couple hours before running, I could push it to 8:30-ish.

But that’s when I only have to do one mile. My 5K pace is more like 12-minute miles.

Only two more days until race day!
