Blender, I Love Thee

This is my new toy.

Picture of my new blender.

I marched into the Bed, Bath, & Beyond on Friday night, armed with a 20% off coupon and a hankering for the patatas bravas and the chicken tikka masala* in the latest issue of Fine Cooking. Both are recipes that call for pureeing, and I did not have anything that could puree.

I had read the blender review from a previous issue of Cook’s Illustrated. If I couldn’t find one of the top-rated blenders (I didn’t), I would try to find one that had the design features they recommended. And this KitchenAid blender looked at me with its puppy eyes and begged me to take it home.

It had the recommended tapered jar. Point. The jar wasn’t heavy as sin, unlike every other blender on the shelf. Double point. Polycarbonate is pretty tough stuff for being so light—my glasses lenses are made from polycarbonate. Another point. And KitchenAid’s reputation for making good appliances, the recommendation of a different KitchenAid blender in the blender review, and the price point all made me fairly confident that this guy wouldn’t pass out while crushing half a tray of ice. Plus, it was aesthetically pleasing. I was sold.

In the short time I’ve had it, it has quite possibly replaced the slow cooker as my favorite kitchen appliance. It crushes, liquifies, and purees at lightning speed, cranking out smoothies of an excellent, creamy consistency that deserve the name “smoothie”.

Don’t ask me how I managed to do five years of college and two years of grad school sans blender.

*The patatas bravas get a thumbs up. I brought them (and two other tapas also in the latest Fine Cooking) to a potluck and they were gone in minutes. The chicken for the chicken tikka masala is marinating in the fridge as we speak.

Hey I was just thinking about whether I should finally get a blender! I got this meal replacement “mix” that requires blending with an apple and banana, so I’ve been creative with mixing it in other things (usually not a good outcome)….
