Having a Spell

I’m watching the National Spelling Bee finals right now and remember how, when I was a kid, I was convinced that spelling bees were some sort of highly effective torture device. I still have the missed words from my third and fifth-grade spelling bees burned into my brain.

Smoking Ban Dies Again

An appeals court has struck down the Allegheny county smoking ban that was to have gone into effect on May 1.

This news really, really disappoints me. Frankly, I don’t see this as a personal freedom issue. To me, it is completely a public health issue and I truly believe that smoking should be banned in all public places, inside and outside. I don’t care what people do on their own personal property. I have no objections if anybody wants to turn the inside of their house or car blue with cigarette smoke. But I don’t think anybody has the right to expose me to a known carcinogen against my will.

Commencement

Graduation weekend here at CMU has come and gone. After three years here, I still haven’t quite wrapped my head around CMU’s idea of commencement, with doctoral hoods, diplomas, and degrees conferred at three separate ceremonies. This seems to me, a product of UW-Madison’s ruthlessly efficient commencement process, unnecessarily complicated.
