Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics

I just read an interesting article on Slate regarding the use of statistics in medicine.

I took a class last semester in which we read a number of papers from medical journals instead of psychology journals like we usually do. The different ways in which statistics get used in the two fields was really striking.

Last Weekend's Cooking Extravaganza

Patatas bravas and sauteed mushrooms

Here we have patatas bravas and sauteed mushrooms. Both recipes were super easy. The sauce for the patatas bravas was a little more involved, but even that was mostly throw stuff in a saucepan, simmer, and puree.

I brought these to a potluck dinner and they were gone in no time flat.

Blender, I Love Thee

This is my new toy.

I marched into the Bed, Bath, & Beyond on Friday night, armed with a 20% off coupon and a hankering for the patatas bravas and the chicken tikka masala* in the latest issue of Fine Cooking. Both are recipes that call for pureeing, and I did not have anything that could puree.

I had read the blender review from a previous issue of Cook’s Illustrated. If I couldn’t find one of the top-rated blenders (I didn’t), I would try to find one that had the design features they recommended. And this KitchenAid blender looked at me with its puppy eyes and begged me to take it home.
